Madelaine Drohan is an award-winning author, veteran journalist, and Honorary Senior Fellow at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa. An authority on public policy and North American cross-border history, she is the author of He Did Not Conquer: Benjamin Franklin’s Failure to Annex Canada, an insightful examination of early American attempts to absorb its northern neighbour.
Over a distinguished career, she served as the Canada correspondent for The Economist and covered politics and economics across Europe, Africa, and Asia for The Globe and Mail, Maclean’s, and the Financial Post. Her acclaimed earlier work, Making a Killing: How and Why Corporations Use Armed Force to Do Business, won the Ottawa Book Award and was shortlisted for the National Business Book of the Year.
Her contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including the 2001 Hyman Solomon Award for Excellence in Public Policy Journalism, a Reuters Fellowship at Oxford University in 1998, and a 2004 Media Fellowship at the Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership. She has also served on the boards of Transparency International Canada and Partnership Africa Canada.
With her signature blend of deep historical scholarship and sharp journalistic insight, Mme Drohan brings a vital perspective to how Canada has navigated—and continues to navigate—its complex relationship with the superpower next door.
